Sharing is caring!

This antique pine dresser had some beautiful details, but the old finish just wasn’t doing it for me. So I decided to paint it! I wanted to keep its classic feel, so I decided to paint it black and add some new antiqued bronze hardware.

In these quick guides, I walk through the steps and products I used for a particular makeover. Interested in learning more about a particular step or process? For more information, please refer to the links at the bottom of this post, where I provide detailed tutorials on these steps.

Makeover Steps:

  1. Cleaned and scuff-sanded (using 180 grit) the entire piece.
  2. Used Bondo to fill in some major dings and dents and left the rest as part of the character and charm of this piece. A large chunk of one of the front legs was missing so I rebuilt that missing chunk with Bondo.
  3. Did one coat of shellac to seal the pine and prevent any bleed-through.
  4. Painted in the color Jett Black by Melange Paints.
  5. Sealed the entire piece with General Finishes High Performance Topcoat, and this brush, designed specifically for topcoats.
  6. Drawer slides were treated with a drawer lubricant.
  7. New hardware and drawer liners were added.
