From dark and dated to cool and fresh, this painted bookcase makeover highlights the power of paint! When a client reached out about updating this old pine bookshelf, I knew it would be a great makeover. She wanted something more modern and coastal, so we decided on this two-toned look.

In these quick guides, I walk through the steps and products I used for a particular makeover. Interested in learning more about a step or process? Please refer to the links at the bottom of this post, where I provide detailed tutorials on these steps.
Makeover Steps:
- Removed the back from the bookshelf. This makes it so much easier to paint the interior.
- Cleaned the entire piece with degreaser.
- There were chew marks on the front bottom shelf – I filled these with Kwikwood and sanded smooth.
- Filled pine knots, a few small holes, and other imperfections with wood filler, sanded smooth.
- On the back, I filled the lines between the paneling with wood filler, sanded smooth.
- Scuff sanded the entire piece with 220-grit sandpaper and my SurfPrep sander.
- Primed with Melange Paints stain-blocking primer, lightly sanding between coats.
- Painted the interior and back in Traveler Blue by Melange Paints. Painted the exterior in Perfect White by Melange Paints (use code FRESH10 to save 10%).
- Sealed with General Finishes High Performance Top Coat and my favorite top coating brush.
