Painted Campaign Desk Makeover

Whenever I find Campaign-style furniture it’s an automatic buy for me if the price is right. This desk was no exception, even though it had been previously painted and would need some extra work to strip off the paint. And can you believe they just painted over the brass brackets? Me neither! Check out the steps and products I used to transform this desk below.

In these quick guides, I walk through the steps and products I used for a particular makeover. Interested in learning more about a particular step or process? Check out the links at the bottom of this post where I go into greater detail on each step.
Steps I took to create this look:
- Removed the hardware and stripped the entire piece (including the brass brackets) with GreenEZ furniture stripper. Since completing this project I have reviewed several green stripping products and if I were to do this project again, I would use SmartStrip instead.
- Scuff sanded the laminate top with 180 grit sandpaper and the wood on the rest of the piece with 220 using my SurfPrep sander.
- Repaired minor scratches on the of the peice with Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty
- Primed with a bonding primer by Melange Paints
- Painted in the color Talley Green by Melange Paints
- Sealed with General Finishes High-Performance Top Coat in Flat and my favorite top coating brush
- Added peel-and-stick wallpaper for drawer liners.
- Cleaned and polished the hardware and brackets.
